Linguistic Inflation

Just as inflation refers to money losing its purchasing power – that is, the currency losing value in relation to goods and services – so too does the term "linguistic inflation" refer to the loss of meaning in language: words losing value in relation to their meanings, or rather, diminishing in their ability to express them.

Everything is shared consideration, therefore, both in the case of money and in that of language, the loss of value is the consideration that they have less value.
The difference lies in the fact that, whereas the consideration that money has less value stems from an awareness, the awareness that the quantity of money in circulation has increased whilst the quantity of existing goods remains the same, in the case of words, this consideration may stem from a lack of awareness, ignorance of the very existence of the words, or from an awareness, the claim to rewrite them.

Ignorance is the pure and simple failure to know that words to express certain meanings already exist, and consequently inventing, from the depths of one’s own unforgivable ignorance, or accepting from other equally unforgivably ignorant sources, other words to express those same meanings.

Arrogance is the need to feel important by belittling others, and in the case of language, it manifests itself in the claim to replace words that already exist with others of one’s own choosing to indicate the same meanings.

It goes without saying that ignorance and arrogance — quite in addition to being both unforgivable — all too often go hand in hand in this despicable destruction of one’s own mother tongue.
